There’s nothing like a good run off the leash to burn off excess energy. And as we all know, a tired dog is a good dog!
Whether it’s your first time or hundredth visit, here are some tips to ensure your dog enjoys each and every visit.
Before you even consider taking your dog to the dog park, make sure its vaccinations, flea, tick and heart worm protection are up to date.
The dog should have a collar with a name tag on. Make sure the name tag has your phone number on it. If you are worried about the tag falling off, write your telephone number on the collar.
Don’t even think of having a picnic in the dog park. Seriously. Not unless you are willing to share it with all the dogs! True story - While visiting the dog park one day, a person was waving a burger around and was very surprised when a dog jumped up and grabbed it out of his hands.
As you approach the dog park, let the dog sniff and look in through the fence. This is important especially if it is the dog's first time. Take it easy. Let the dog get used to the smells. If the dog is apprehensive, just walk around on the outside until the dog is ready. You might even need to scrap the idea of going in and visit another day. Listen to what your dog says.
At the entrance, there are usually double gates. Think of it as an airlock on a space shuttle. Always, always close one gate before opening the other. This is to prevent all the dogs in the dog park from making a run for freedom!
If you have a small dog, I would carry the dog while going through the gates. Once in the dog park, try and make your way away from the gate before putting the dog down. The other dogs in the dog park will likely rush towards the newcomer. So brace yourself!
For dogs that you can’t carry, drop the leash and let your dog greet all the other dogs. When you get a chance, remove the leash but leave the collar and/or harness on.
